[Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 20, 2022] – Our company has officially completed the installation of 34 bus shelters across major residential, commercial, and transportation hubs in Ethiopia, including key areas in Addis Ababa and surrounding cities. This project aims to upgrade local public transport waiting facilities while creating valuable advertising opportunities for local and international advertising agencies, marking a win-win collaboration for urban infrastructure improvement and commercial promotion.
Designed with simplicity and practicality at its core, these bus shelters prioritize functionality to meet the daily needs of Ethiopian commuters. Departing from overly complex structural designs, the shelters adopt a clean, minimalist framework: a sturdy steel frame supports a weather-resistant polycarbonate roof, providing reliable protection against sun, rain, and dust—common challenges in the local climate. The open-side design ensures good ventilation and visibility, allowing commuters to easily spot approaching buses, while the smooth, uncluttered exterior reduces maintenance needs and aligns with the practical demands of public facilities in the region. This straightforward design not only accelerates the installation process (completing the 34 shelters in just 6 weeks) but also ensures long-term usability with minimal upkeep costs for local authorities.
The standout feature of these bus shelters is their extra-large advertising spaces, specifically tailored to meet the needs of advertising companies. Each shelter is equipped with two dedicated ad display areas: a 2.4m × 1.8m vertical panel on the front facade (visible to both pedestrians and passing vehicles) and a 3m × 1.2m horizontal panel on the roof’s side edge (highly noticeable from a distance). These spaces are designed to accommodate various advertising formats, including vinyl posters, digital prints, and even temporary promotional banners, with a flat, smooth surface that ensures clear image presentation. Unlike traditional bus shelters where ad spaces are limited or tucked away, the ad areas here occupy over 60% of the shelter’s external surface—maximizing brand exposure for advertisers and making the shelters an ideal outdoor media platform.
To further support advertising partners, the shelters are installed in high-traffic locations carefully selected based on local commuter data: areas with daily foot traffic exceeding 5,000 people, such as near markets, schools, hospitals, and bus terminals. This strategic placement guarantees that ads displayed on the shelters reach a broad and diverse audience, including local residents, students, workers, and tourists. Additionally, the ad panels are made of high-durability materials that resist fading under strong sunlight and damage from occasional impacts, ensuring that advertisements maintain their vividness for up to 6 months without replacement.
Commenting on the project, a project manager from our company said, “We recognized two key needs in Ethiopia’s urban development: better public transport waiting facilities for commuters and effective outdoor advertising channels for businesses. These 34 bus shelters address both—their simple design ensures they serve the public reliably, while the large ad spaces offer tangible value to advertising companies. We believe this model can become a sustainable way to fund and improve public infrastructure here.”
Local advertising agencies have already expressed strong interest in the shelters. A representative from a leading Ethiopian advertising firm noted, “Outdoor advertising in Ethiopia has long lacked high-visibility, well-located platforms. These bus shelters’ spacious ad areas, combined with their placement in busy neighborhoods, are exactly what we need to help our clients reach target audiences. We’ve already started discussing partnerships with local brands to occupy these spaces.”
A municipal official in Addis Ababa also praised the project: “These shelters have quickly become popular among commuters for their practicality. What’s more, the advertising component creates a self-sustaining model—revenue from ad placements can be reinvested in maintaining and expanding public transport facilities. This is a great example of how private-sector expertise can support public infrastructure goals.”
With the completion of this project, our company has demonstrated its ability to tailor infrastructure solutions to local needs. The 34 bus shelters in Ethiopia not only enhance the daily commuting experience but also unlock new commercial potential for the advertising industry, laying the groundwork for future collaborations to drive both urban development and business growth in the region.
